WA Raw talent Royal Awards

Every year, Royal Agricultural Society of WA holds competitions and awards to showcase and present many of our WA produce.

This year is no different, with more competitions than ever before and with many more new entrants.

The Royal Food Awards presents:
- Sausage Awards on 20th June
- Small goods Awards on 22nd June (NEW)
- Branded Meat Awards on 25th June (NEW)
- Pantry Goods Awards on 27th June
- Beer Awards on 1-2nd July
- Dairy Awards on 4-5th July
- Alternative Milk Product Awards on 4-5th July (NEW)
- Bread and Pastry Awards on 25th July
- Chocolate Awards on 24th August - which Perthyums will take part in judging!
- Olives Awards on 25-26th August
- Wine Awards on 26-29th August
- Cider Awards on 28th August (NEW)
- Coffee Awards on 22-29th September

There are opportunities for the general public to be involved in including the Beer Awards which will be held through two beef festival sessions on the weekend of 14-15th July, showcasing award winning beers. Moreover, public can enjoy some coffee competition in action during the IGA Perth Royal Show through Latte Art, Coffee cupping and Barista competition held in the Taste WA marquee.

Some of the best #TasteWA produce on offer were showcased at the opening of the Royal Food Awards at Channel 9 studio presented as a grazing table.

 

These included past Award winners and 2018 entrants such as Mt Claremont Village Bakery's donuts, MJ creations, Mundella, Margaret River Dairy Company, etc.

With growing passion and interest for WA's finest ingredients and produces amongst foodies and general public, RASWA strives to accommodate public interest by showcasing local producers and allowing them to showcase their best produce through exciting competitions and subsequently customers to discover the produces.

I am loving these local, handmade gelato places popping up around Perth in the recent year. I remember the days when getting icecream went only as far as the Baskin Robbins, icecream truck or supermarkets (not that I have anything against that)! Perth people can now get picky with choosing what sort of icecream or gelato and flavours. Pietro Gelateria is fairly new to the icecream-scene in Perth, and follows suit from Whisk Creamery in Northbridge and Subiaco, Chicho Gelato in Northbridge, Kuld Creamery in Highgate and Roho Bure icecream in South Fremantle. THE honeycake

Honeycake is the first WA operated cakery specialising in traditional Czech layered cake from a centuries old Bohemian recipe. It incorporates layers of smooth, creamy caramel topped with walnuts and honey crumbs using natural, preservatives free ingredients. Not only do they sell cakes, but they range from icecream pops in collaboration with #pashpop, to different flavours of honeycake including chocolate, cheesecake and now PANDAN! I still cannot believe the first time I've tried the cake. Velvety smooth, and just a pleasure in my mouth. Luckily, they are always generously offering tasters at their shops - courtesy to the owner Simona, a lovely lady who has passion for her delicious creation and the customers. Trialled and tested recipe- Jatz pie

Good ol' jatz tastes so good on its own but also good when baked as a pie! Before baking in oven 1. Jatz pie (From Taste Magazine) Serves 12// Prep time 15 mins// Cook 28mins Makes 2 pies Ingredients: 150g butter, diced 125ml pouring cream 200g caster sugar 120g brown sugar 15g milk powder 3 eggs 1tsp vanilla extract Finely grated rind of 1/2 orange 1 packet of Jatz biscuits For pie base: 210g raw sugar 180g plain flour, sieved 75g desiccated coconut 160g butter, melted Steps: 1) For the pie base, preheat oven to 170 degrees and line two 22cm diameter cake tins with baking paper. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl, then mix in melted butter (it will appear like coarse breadcrumbs). 2) Press pie base into the prepared tins and bake until light golden (8-9 mins). 3) Heat butter and cream in a saucepan over medium heat until butter is melted.
